Name
The relative name a node has inside its parent, one path segment chosen by a writer, which may collide and is never identity.
Fetching schema…

Part of Stem. This page defines the name field of a Node.

A name is one path segment, 1 to 255 characters, with no slash, backslash or control characters, that a node has inside its parent.

Rules

A name is addressing, not identity. Two nodes under one parent may carry the same name; the resolution rule in Placement picks which one a pretty path shows and clients surface the collision. A node without a name is unnamed and reachable only by id, which is how private documents and comments avoid human-readable paths. Renaming is a new Node blob with a different name; nothing else changes. Names are compared byte for byte; clients should normalise to NFC before signing. The space root has no name.

Today (HM24)

A path segment, with the same character rules, but today the whole path is the identity and the permission scope. Stem keeps the segment and drops the rest.
